Nervous about train travel!

My husband and I are a little nervous about our first trip to Europe and using the trains. We're flying into Milan and then taking a train to Vienna. After a few days there we'll take a train down to Trieste (IT).

Do we need reservations? The Deutsche Bahn site says reservations required but you can't reserve it there. I checked the Italia Rail site (https://www.railkey.com/) which says Reservation Possible for one leg and then Reservation Advised for the final leg.

Is it cheaper to purchase in advance?

What they really mean is that you have to have a seat reservation. Some trains are open seating. For the most purchasing a ticket a day or two in advance is fine. You didn't indicate your travel period. The are a few discount for purchasing in advance but it is not like the training you have had from the Am airline system where the price goes up closer you are to the travel date.

I think that you have a good reason to be a bit aprehensive. The train journey from Milan to Vienna takes 14.0hr.-15.0hrs. It can't be fun to jump on such a ride after a long international flight.

One alternative you have is to fly from Milan to Vienna. Beginning June 16, AirBerlin will begin flights to Vienna from Milan Malpensa (terminal 1). They currently fly to Vienna from Milan-Orly (Milan's other airport). I don't know when you intend to travel but I see a 46Euro fare. Not bad.

Susan, you might find it helpful to read Rick's "Rail Skills" chapter in Europe Through The Back Door (I would HIGHLY recommend it!). It helped me a lot to understand the rail system prior to my first trip to Europe.

Regarding tickets and reservations, most of the "fast" trains (TGV, etc.) require compulsory seat reservations. If you buy P-P tickets, the reservation fee will be included (as opposed to using a Rail Pass, where this fee has to be paid separately). Unless it's a major holiday or something in Italy (or there's a strike happening), you should be fine buying tickets in Milan for your journey to Vienna and then to Trieste. I usually try to buy tickets a day or two before my outgoing journey, and so far haven't had a problem with that approach.

Since this is your first trip via train, you'll need to give some thought to which train you choose and the number of changes. You didn't indicate your travel dates or the time your flight arrives in Milano, so it's difficult to suggest a particular train. One example though is a train departing Milano Centrale at 07:05, arriving Wien Westbahnhof at 18:28 (Time 11H23M, one change at Innsbruck Hbf). Note that many cities have more than one station, so that's an important consideration also.

I've never flown into Milano, so not sure on the method to get from the airport to Milano Centrale. If you could provide more details, I'm sure the group here would be able to provide some good information.

Cheers!

thanks for the help Frank, Larry, and Ken.

We arrive in Milan June 29th at 6am and will spend the night in Milan before heading to Vienna. One of the appeals of this plan was riding the train through Innsbruck and Salzburg although I will check into the Air Berlin flight that Larry mentioned. And I have "Back Door" as well as the Germany/Vienna book -- very helpful!
