Need transportation help for Italy

I'm going to be traveling from Rome to Positano on a saturady and wanted to know what is the best way to do this. My thoughts right now is taking the train from rome to naples then hoping on another train that takes me closer to positano, then getting a private car to take me to my hotel. If you can think of any better way to do this please let me know and if you know what this might cost as well, thanks

I suggest that you are close. Take the Trenitalia train to Naples from Rome. Change to the Circumvesuviana train system and go to Sorrento. From Sorrento, take the local bus to Positano. The SITA bus from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana Train Station to Positano will stop at Chiesa Nuova or Positano Torre Sponda (both are bus stops). You're going to enjoy Positano.

Thanks for the help. I do have one question as I've been trying to work the trains website and keep on getting error messages. I believe I'm putting in the correct stations, but just getting the error messages. Do you think with luggage that the bus or a car would be a better choice? thanks again

What website are you trying to work with and what information are you trying to enter? We can help with the train sites.

You really should avoid the car. Wait until you see the road from Sorrento to Positano. It's really narrow and you don't want to compete with an Italian driver, especially the tons of tour bus drivers that drive the route.

Larry I wasn't thinking of renting a car and driving myself, but was thinking of getting a taxi or private driver to take us. The hotel we're staying at has some people that do this for them, but it can get to be a lot of money. Since we're on time crunch I wanted to save as much time as possible, but if a bus is going to cost 2-5 euro and the car 50 euro but won't save us anytime then its not worth it. Do you know where i can check the bus schedule, becuase we'll be traveling on saturday and I know this can have limited access.

Travis, I've never seen this website before. They appear to be the parent company of Trenitalia, the Italian train website. If you go to www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html you will see the same train schedules.

As for the bus between Sorrento and Positano, it departs every 15 minutes during the day. It's a 50-minute journey. I don't know how far your hotel is from the Chiesa Nuova stop in Positano but you might email them and inquire. Positano is not that big but it is mostly on a steep hill.
