My husband, daughter and I need to hire a private driver from rome to sorrento and then sorrento back to rome 5 days later. Does anyone have a recommendation of a driver or company? Thank you. Gerri

This is a highly regarded and reasonably priced Rome company. We have only used them for airport transfers but they do other work. They are quick to respond to enquiries. Expect to pay 400 to 500 euro for that journey. http://www.romecabs.com/ PS - another link for a Sorrento based company for you to check out. We have used them but again only for Naples airport or station to Sorrento transfers. http://www.gianpierofiorentino.com/en/transfers/

Have you considered using the train from Rome to Naples (and then maybe using a private service, if you really need it)? It is considerably cheaper and it's pretty straightforward - you'll go Rome to Naples and then transfer from there to Sorrento. I went that route as a solo traveler without any issues.

Thank you Agnes for your reply. We were concerned about toting our luggage throughout the train station. Might reevaluate though. Gerri

Unfortunately the better solution is to reduce the amount of luggage. Much cheaper than a private driver. There is a direct bus to/from Sorrento (a couple of times of day) that could be a reasonable alternative.

Thank you Frank. An Italian friend of our family suggested the same scenario. Gerri

I totally agree that doing anything to cut down your luggage and taking the train is more reasonable - the airline can also fine you for overweight luggage and that's money you can spend on your "real" Italy experience (food, wine, wonderful things to do) instead of the dead weight of luggage. It's hot in Italy so hopefully you can pack light. This was really hard for me, but I learned to pack just a carry-on (no need to check in) even for a 2 week trip. If need be, I just did laundry there. It's literally changed my life to pack light - my back doesn't hurt and I just feel more flexible. Of course this may not be for you due to a lot of reasons, but if you can, give it a thought. Paying 400-500 Euros (round trip)is a pretty big cost

"Paying 400-500 Euros (round trip)is a pretty big cost" Sorry did not make it clear, that price is one way. I agree that the Marozzi bus service could be a good alternative.

It's not going to be toting that luggage just through the train station. You will be toting it everywhere. There will be no one to help you unless you are traveling very high-end and then the help will be less than you expect. The best advice I've seen is to pack what you want to take and lug it around for at least 15 minutes up and down lots of stairs, along sidewalks, etc. before you go. Each of you needs to be able to lift, carry, roll and generally handle your own luggage without help from anyone. I know it's hard to imagine if you haven't done it, but I travel with a 22" spinner and a tote for our annual one month trip to Europe. I carry on and check nothing. Coordination and using laundry facilities are the keys for me. I've never had to wash anything out in a sink. Another must do for me is to take only the lotions and potions that will fit in my 3-1-1 bag and to buy more there if needed. I'm not special. I've just internalized the packing advice on the RS website. Another suggestion is the Vivienne Files for travel capsules. You might not relate to the exact things she shows but the concepts are priceless. Try to resist the temptation to plan your transportation around your luggage instead of planning your packing around the realities of being in Europe.
