Need Help with transportation: Paris -> Rome -> Munich -> Prague -> Berlin

Hi,

My husband and I will be going to Europe in April for the first time and we need some help with rail/flight.

We are planning to go from:
London -> Paris -> Rome -> Munich -> Prague -> Berlin -> London.

We would perfer to use the Night train for longer distance, so that we can save money (one less night for hotel) and time (by the time we get up we are there already, yah!). Of course if flight is cheaper than rail, then we will definitely take that.

That is what we have planned so far:

  • London -> Paris - Eurostar

  • Paris -> Rome - ? We are considering taking the night train, as our hotel is only 5 km from the termini station. But we also noticed some cheaper flight on skyscanner for 109 euro.

  • Rome -> Munich - CNL

  • Munich -> Prague - Night Train? I had a look at the Bahn site, there are a few options but many require mulitple transfers. The one with no transfer departs in the afternoon and arrives Prague around 22:50, however that maybe too late for us.

  • Prague -> Berlin - ?

  • Berlin -> London - Flight

thanks,
Sonia

Have you thought about flying in London and out of Berlin. It might be a little more expensive but I think it would be well worth your time and money.

Berlin -> London - we are considering flying. Coz if the time is right, I can even hang around at the airport, and catch my return flight back to Sydney from London :)

The parts that I am very unsure of are Paris to Rome, Munich to Prague and Prague back to Berlin. At first we were thinking flying, but after searching on skyscanner (that is the only site i know) there seem to be not that many flights.

In addition to skyscanner.net, two other good budget airline search engines are whichbudget.com and flylc.com.

Booked up to 90 days in advance at voyages-sncf.com, you can get a discount fare of €70 for a bunk in a four-person couchette on the Paris-Rome night train. (Full fare for that couchette is €105.) Full fare for a bed in a double sleeper is €180.

There is a direct Munich-Prague train that departs at 08:44 and one that departs at 12:44 with only a single change at Schwandorf.

Booked far enough in advance at bahn.de, you can get a Europa-Spezial Tschechien fare as low as €19 for Prague-Berlin.

The one that departs at 8:44 from Munich sounds good for us. That means we will get to prague in the afternoon.

What about Prague to Berlin?

I am wondering if it would be better to do Munich -> Berlin -> Prague -> London?

As there are heaps of cheap plane tickets from Munich to Berlin and it takes only an hour. However there aren't that many tickets from Prague back to London.

As I said in my previous post, you can get a discount fare of €19 at bahn.de for Prague-Berlin. There are eleven direct trains/day.

There are even more trains for Berlin-Munich, many direct and some with one connection. Booked at bahn.de, you can get Dauer-Spezial fares of €29 on nearly all of them.

IMO, so long as the travel time is no more than six hours or so, taking the train is better than flying. Don't forget the time and expense of getting to and from airports plus the time it takes to check in and go through security.

Thanks Tim. I did a few searches and i saw some specials until Jan. None for April yet, but i am sure they will show up later.

Another thing I would like to ask is, what is the difference between a 1st class and a 2nd class seats?
