Need Frankfurt Airport Help

My husband and I will be arriving at Frankfurt Airport via Lufthansa. We will then be traveling by train from the airport station - going to Strasbourg.

Can someone please give me general directions on how we get from the airport terminal to the train station. I've looked at the airport map, but find it a little confusing.

Thanks once again for your help.

There are two stations at Frankfurt airport:

  • Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof (= local station)
  • Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof (= long distance station)

The Regionalbahnhof is underneath terminal 1, The Fernbahnhof is between terminals 1 and 2. They are both well signposted and at most a 5 minute walk from arrivals.
You need to find out which station you are departing from. If you are getting a train into Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (=main station, in the city centre) and changing there it is probably the Regionalbahnhof. If you are getting an IC or ICE train direct from the airport it is the Fernbahnhof.
When you look up times and prices on http://bahn.de it will say which station it is. If you already have booked tickets it will say on the tickets.

You'll be going to the Fernbahnhof. Trains going to Strasbourg (first change at Mannheim or Offenburg), leave at 7 minutes before the hour. Follow the airport signage with the little train icon.

When I flew in/out of FRA in 1988, I had the impression that the Regionalbahnhof was under the terminal building (it might have been, then). Since then I have come to realize that it is under the building across the access road from Terminal 1. The best way to get to it is to go to the great hall of Terminal 1 and take the stairs/escalators from just inside the outside wall of the terminal to the mall under the street which leads to the Regionalbahnhof.

The Fernbahnhof is further out from Terminal 1. There is an enclosed bridge from the building across the road, over an autobahn, to the Fernbahnhof. In the past I've gotten to it by going up to the second floor mezzanine in Terminal 1 and across the pedestrian bridge over the access road, then through the building and out the enclosed walkway. Last fall, my route from the new A/Z concourse took me into the Regionalbahnhof, and I followed the signs from there to the Fernbahnhof.

Our tickets say: Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf. And yes, we do change in Manheim. Thanks all for your help. It's good to know you're all just a click away.

It's best just to follow the pictogram signs. If we describe step-by-step directions, you'll inevitably miss a turn or go down the wrong flight of stairs. But if you follow the signs, you won't go wrong.

Sue, having just done this, if the maps don't help, don't worry. It will all be clear once you are there and see the lay of the land.
