Need Advice !! - European Train Travel - September / October 2015

Looking for most economical way to travel by train. Our itinerary is already set, as well as lodging and rental car.

IMO - Most likely buying point to point - as far in advance - will be most economical.
Several point to points are too far to advance to book at this time.

I utilize "Seat 61" as well as country specific sites for rail travel.

  1. September 14th - Venice to Como S. Giovanni - 4 nights
  2. September 18th - Como SG to Murren, Switzerland - 5 nights
  3. September 23rd -Murren to Dijon Ville (Gare Sncf de Dijon Ville), France - 4 nights
  4. September 27th - Dijon Ville to Paris - 7 nights
  5. October 4th - Paris to Ghent - 3 nights
  6. October 7th - Ghent to Amsterdam - 5 nights

Any and all advice / recommendations would be greatly appreciated !!

You are right, buying point to point would be the best. Here's what we do. We plan to have at least three nights at one place. As soon as we get off the train we buy our ticket to the next place. In a train station the ticket agent told us if we buy a ticket seventy-two hours ahead of time there is a good discount, up to a third. So we have done that ever since.

We buy our tickets at a window with an agent and make sure they understand what day we want to leave. Also, its a very good idea to also buy a reserve seat because it looks like most of the trains you will be on might be full.
