Going to London and Paris in July and I missed the US Air special for around $500 RT. I have been looking and checking all web sites for cheap rates and there is nothing below 1,200. Any help would be apreciated. Thx. Annie
Frank - I've always assumed that booking on the airline's site gave the best fare, but see the fares I quoted in my post above where the fare on the US Air site is actually higher. However, those fares on orbitz and cheaptickets still aren't as good as the one Annie missed earlier.
Actually I think that is a pretty good fare for July. Remember you are in the peak travel time. I would like to have seen the "details" for the %500 fare.
I did a search at kayak.com, put in two arbitrary dates in July, and found US Air tickets for SF0-LHR and CDG-SFO for $980 on orbitz.com and $982 on cheaptickets.com. When I went to the US Air site and entered those same dates, the fare approached $1200.
it is pretty hard to find open jaw air fares on the web. I always call the airlines with my arrival city and departure city and ask for the fare.
Buying open jaw fares is cheaper than buying separate one way fare to a city and one way fare return from another city.
You must talk with an agent to find the best fare.
Our experience is contrary to Carl's recommendation. Nearly all of our trips are open jaw tickets booked on the web directly with the airlines. This past New Year's we flew into Madrid and home from Malaga. Last summer we flew to Rome and home from Zurich. That ticket was actually $200 less than a RT ticket to Rome. It is very easy to find open jaw tickets on the web just by using the advance search or the multi-city function that -- I think -- is available on all site including the airline sites. I generally use one of the travel sites (Orbitz, Kayak, etc.) to get a feel of what is available and then book directly through the airline site for the best rate. I have never found using an airline representative to be cheaper.
There's always Priceline. Start bidding extremely low and see what you can get. I've had great luck with Priceline countless times.
Annie, I agree with Carl. We were looking to fly into Dublin and out of Edinburgh and the open jaw tix were about $950.00. Round trip to Dublin is about $750.00 and Aer Lingus tix from Edinburgh to Dublin is only about $35.00. So as I am pricing tix, I keep checking the open jaw prices just in case they drop to match what I found with my second option. I have found every single discount website and regular airline website have the open jaw option, but many times they call it "multiple cities" or "more options." Sometimes you just have to search the page carefully to find it... Good luck!
It may be some work and time but try cheaptickets or similiar every week. plug in you alert price. Watch and wait is nerve raking but I do this every summer. It is the only way to pay less and go peak season. If you are willing to ck another airport also like Frankfurt you may find a much better fare. Paris now is always higher than Frankfurt or Munich.
