National Express (Heathrow T5 to Southampton)

I am headed on a cruise out of Southampton in July 2026 with family (some of whom are arriving separately). My senior parents and I are arriving at Heathrow T5 on a British Airways flight form Vancouver that is scheduled to arrive at 14:30 on a Friday afternoon. We plan to take the direct National Express bus to Southampton as we are staying there in advance of our Sunday sailing, with an eye to taking the 16:25 coach. We have done this transfer previously in December 2017 and we purchased tickets at the Heathrow Bus terminal. I was wondering if anyone has more recent experience, whether pre-booking is a good idea and if just under 2 hours is enough time.

Of note, my dad and I are both dual British/Canadian citizens and my mum is solely Canadian. We would all be eligible to use the e-gates at Immigration from what I have seen.

Terminal 5 doesn’t have a ticket machine. Only the main bus station at terminal 2/3 has the ticket machine. You can purchase your tickets through the app on your phone. Another option is to pay a bit more for a flex fare in advance that allows you to make last minute changes. Then you have tickets preloaded on phone app and just make changes as needed.

In Terminal 5, outside arrivals, go directly outside and cross to the bus area. Turn left once there. I think it is stand 13 or 14 but check with staff on the ground to confirm.

Irrespective of whether there is a machine (and the NE website is likely to be more up to date) you are better buying on line.
On line create a free account and the booking fee is waived when you buy on line.
Otherwise you are charged £1.50 on line, or £2 at a machine.

Note that Flixbus also now run from Heathrow Bus Station and Terminal 5 to Southampton giving extra journey options. Their fares are usually cheaper, but you can't avoid their booking fee. Flixbus has to be booked on line.
