Personally, having done both, I would hate to miss the opportunity to see Pompeii. Whilst I loved areas of the Isle of Capri, in parts it felt like a very large tourist trap. High end retail shops everyhwere, incredibly high prices for a basic lunch and coffee. However, I did very much enjoy the out of the way areas of the island and the boat trip around the island to the Blue Grotto. Pompeii for me though had a much bigger impact.

What are you getting for the $450? Is the driver just taking you to Pompeii or waiting for you there and then taking you on to the harbor in Sorrento? The train from Naples to Pompeii is only about 5 euro one way and then maybe only another 5 to Sorrento. You need to carefully map out the time this will all take to see if you can fit all this in in 10 hours though as Pompeii alone can be hours. Good luck.

That is impossible unless your idea of seeing Pompeii is driving pass it and maybe sticking your head inside for ten minutes or so. It takes several hours at Pompeii just to get a quick overview. Even with the hydrofoil the travel time is close to hour each way. And if the sea is rough the hydrofoil will not run. When the ship may show a 10 docking you actually will have closer to eight hours or maybe nine. Toss in a little lunch somewhere and maybe seven hours left and another three to four hours of travel and you have only fours hours for Pompeii, Sorrento, AND Capri. Pompeii and Sorrento is best you can do.

The $450 is for the driver picking us up at the pier, driving us to Pompeii and afterward driving us to Sorrento. There is an additional charge of $150 for an English speaking guide for two hours in Pompeii. So the total for the morning is about $600. I have been to Pompeii myself twice and recall there being lots of Engligh speaking guides hanging around the entrance looking to work as a guide. I assume they are still there, does anyone know how much they charge?Suggestions???

Do you have Rick's Italy book as he can recommend guides for Pompeii and maybe price. Remember that if a guide there charges 20 euro each, you are at 160 euro and your limo company mentioned 150 euro so you are a little ahead. Just another thing or two to consider. You can take local train to Pompeii, hire local guide there and spend a couple of hours. Then train on to Sorrento. Take the bus to Positano or Ravello and have lunch there, walk around and catch bus back to Naples. The views from the bus are GREAT. This might be a lot cheaper than the $600 you are quoting (of course I left out Capri as I think that is just not possible in this time frame.) So many choices, so little time, right?

I personally vote for: taking a taxi to Naples Centrale train station (the main station), going downstairs to the Naples Garibaldi Circumvesuviana train station, then riding approx. 15-20 mins to the Pompei Scavi stop, 'do' Pompeii, then reverse your path back to the ship. Plan for meals... I can't check right now, but the last Naples stop on the Circumvesuviana line might work for you, too. Garibaldi is the 2nd-to-last stop. Now, if your true burning desire is to see Capri or take the hydrofoil...you'll have to work that out. I'm certainly not paying that kind of money for €10 in train fare, plus 2 taxi rides 8-( Depending on weather conditions, watercraft may not be available.
