I will be finishing a sailboat trip at Mykonos and will need to get to Athens. I seem to have the option of a ferry or a flight. I am thinking ferry, but I don't understand the seating options. Any ideas on this? Thanks. Oh, I will have plenty of time to get to Athens since my flight back to the States doesn't leave for 5 days!
We took a number of ferries through the Greek Isles. Though we never went from Mykonos to Athens (I think the longest was from Athens to Paros), all the ferries we took were great. We took two high-speed ferries and one hydrofoil.
I can't tell you much about the seats. We booked ours in advance (actually, a travel agent booked it for us), so I'm not sure we had "economy" or "deluxe" or what. But it seemed like people were sitting wherever they wanted to anyway. I agree on not paying too much, since you might want to be outside a lot or up and walking around.
We also flew from Santorini to Athens, which was a nice, short flight. We then took the subway from the airport to central Athens. That worked out well, too.
Unless the ferries have improved alot in these past years I wouldn't pay more for a " deluxe" seat. We ended up sitting outside as we found inside stuffy and unpleasant, and for goodness sake bring your own snacks .
It is a long ride , but I guess it won't affect you as you obviously don't have a problem on the water, LOL
PS Why rush back to Athens, it isn't that nice!
Just so you know: I don't plan on staying in Athens for 5 days. I will checking out other areas of the mainland. I am more and more thinking I will take a flight just because of the time involved. I will already have had 8 days on the water, so a boat trip will not have the same appeal as it would have had. And I don't want to miss some of the places I want to travel on the mainland.
