My experiences on the overnight trains

OK, we just got back from the trip and did 3 overnight trains. I was a bit concerned since about 2/3 of the people here said they had bad experiences. But . . . my friend and I loved them and slept like babies! Now, we had our own private double sleeper compartments (that locked), not couchettes.

The one thing that surprised me was how very, very small they were! The beds were good sized and comfortable, but the "aisle" where we walked was so small that only one person could stand there at a time. The Paris-Rome train was not too clean (especially the toilet room), but the Venice-Vienna and Vienna-Frankfurt were both quite nice. We got nice breakfasts on all of them and once we got served 2 small bottles of wine before bed. In the last train we had our own bathroom and the shower worked great even if the bathroom was pretty tiny. So, I would definitely travel on them again. My only complaint would be that all the train compartments were so hot. There was no way to turn the heat off. We had to keep the window open (which made it hard to shut the blind) because we needed a breeze to cool down the room. Otherwise it was a great experience and a nice way to travel.

The day trains were also quite nice. On the one from Frankfurt-Paris we were served a lovely lunch with wine. Can't beat the comfort and great scenery either.

I've only been on one night train from Florence to Munich in a 6 bed couchette and I thought it was awesome. It may just have been because it was a new experience but I plan on doing it again for my trip this fall. I agree with the small size but really, you are just sleeping there. Well worth it to wake up in a different country!

We spent a night in a 6 bed couchette, with 12+13 year old daughters, and we all Loved it. It was just another wonderful adventure and we would definately do it again. It's nice to hear that we arn't the only ones who enjoyed the experience.

I've taken one overnight train: Salzburg to Strasbourg. I really didn't like it - the fact that they took my passport made me uneasy and nervous (I understand why they do it, but I still don't like it). I had to use the bathroom during the night, but it was a huge hassle - they locked our compartment from the outside, so I couldn't get the door open. Didn't realize that they had locked it so kept trying to open it (and I was half-asleep so wasn't really thinking), and in doing this woke up the other people I was sharing the compartment with. So, all of these things made for me not getting lots of sleep and being exhausted when we arrived in Strasbourg. I'd probably be willing to try again in the future if it were worth it money-wise, we shall see.
