Murren to Rome - train or plane?

I’m traveling from Murren to Rome on June 8, 2019 with two kids aged 12 and 13. We have carryon only bags. I need to be in Rome by about 4-6pm. I will have a Swiss travel pass with a family card for that day. Looking at flights, the only direct flights I find are out of Geneva or Zurich and they are expensive. I think my best option would be via train.

I’ve been looking at Rome to Rio.
0612-0625 bus Murren to Lauterbrunnen
0632-0653 train Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost
0700-0732 train Interlaken to Thun
Why would it suggest Thun instead of stopping in Spiez?
0754-1037 train Thun to Milano
1100-1359 train Milano to Rome

I’m concerned about tight connections. I also wanted advice on buying tickets. I’ll have the Swiss pass with family card. Can I buy a ticket through to Rome at Thun and they will take into account my travel pass for the Swiss portion?
Or sHould I look at pre-buying the Thun to Milano and Milano to Rome tickets to save money?

Any other travel options?

You need to look at the Swiss train site, SBB.ch, instead of Rome to Rio.

Melissa,

There's no way you'll be able to travel by Bus from Mürren to Lauterbrunnen, as buses can't get to Mürren.

As you have to be in Rome at a certain time, this is the solution I'd suggest.....

  • depart Mürren at 07:06 via BLM to Grütschalp, and then cable car to Lauterbrunnen
  • depart Lauterbrunnen at 07:32 for Interlaken Ost
  • depart Interlaken Ost at 08:00 for Spiez
  • depart Spiez at 08:36 for Brig
  • depart Brig at 09:44 for Milan
  • depart Milano Centrale at 12:00, arrive Roma Termini at 14:55

I used a date of 8 June to research this solution. Although that means an early start, it's about the only way you'll be able to get to Rome at the appointed time. You can see all the solutions on the https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml website.

You might ask your hotel in Mürren if they could prepare a bag lunch so that you'll have something to eat on the trip. Otherwise you could pick something up at one of the stations you'll be transiting, or buy something on the train. The trains from Switzerland to Milan and Milan to Rome will likely have a dining car (I didn't check).

I would think about staying in Interlaken near Ost the night before on June 7th. From there it appears you have two connections in Spiez and Milan of 15min and 23min. You will arrive way before 4pm if you take the 7:29 train out of Ost.
