Munich-West Airport (new!)

Don't we all love Ryanair's terminology? Hahn, an airport just outside Bernkastel-Kues in the Mosel valley is called "Frankfurt" although it would be much smarter if the proximity of the beautiful Mosel river valley would be reflected in the name. Anyway, starting April 29th there will now be "Munich-West" airport. Actually we're talking about the old US air base just outside Memmingen which is closer to Neuschwanstein and Innsbruck than to Munich (85km to Innsbruch, 120km to Munich). Memmingen already is served by TUIfly and Ryanair will start connecting it with London Stansted, Dublin, Barcelona, Sardegna, Pisa (Tuscany) and Alicante (Spain). So whenever you feel like visiting Neuschwanstein castle from any of those places remember "Munich-West" ;-)

RyanError is sooooo misleading. Better to call it Ulm or Augsburg, but Munich, what's an outright lie.

Of course, by another stretch, the fastest connection from Memmingen into Munich is 1hr 14min on an ever-other-hour EC. With MUC being so far (40min by S-Bahn) outside of downtown Munich, the EC connection is only 34min longer, but costs €24 vs ~€9 for the S-Bahn. Connections by regional trains cost a little less but take an hour and a half. I pity the poor souls who get sucked into this one.

Although for Füssen you can use the EC connection faster from Memmingen than by regional train from Munich, the regional connection from Memmingen takes longer.

It really ought to be called Allgäu Airport, and it would be really handy to fly into to get to the Oberstdorf ski area, except that the airports you'd fly from, like Stansted, are so remote.

Update: Looks like the airport really is called "Allgäu Airport" (www.allgaeu-airport.de). Will Ryan change the name just to deceive people?

Add another €2,50 to the €19,60 regional fare or €24 EC fare for the 9 minute scheduled bus into Memmingen. That bus runs roughly every hour, so connection times might be a bit much, but Ryan will probably add a more expensive bus timed to flight arrivals.

I hear they're thinking of flying into Linz and calling it "Munich East" ;)

Maybe they will find a little island in the mid Atlantic and call it New York East.

On a possibly lighter side, according to the RyanError website, they are now offering a €1000 prize to the passenger who comes up with the best suggestion for "ancillary revenue", i.e., the passenger who comes up with the best way to trick his fellow passengers into thinking tickets are less expensive than they really are.

They've been flying into Salzburg for years without ever calling it Munich-East ;-)... Hahn could be "Luxembourg-East", Weeze could be "Amsterdam-East" and... uhm, they already call Bratislava Vienna ;-)
