I've looked at the posts for suggested travel from the Munich airport to downtown but didn't seem to see anything. Can someone suggest the best method of getting from the Munich airport to lets say City Center? Is the train the best - transfering to a cab? I understand cabs from the airport are costly and slow.
I'm surprised that you couldn't find anything in recent posts, as this is a common topic.
Munich has excellent transportation from the airport into town. Two S-Bahn lines run into downtown, one from the east (S8), one from the west (S1). There are six trains an hour all day. The S-Bahn station is conveniently located underground at the airport between the two terminals. Just look for the white 'S' in the green circle.
The fare from the airport, purchasable from automats in the airport S-Bahn station is €9,20. For that you get the S-Bahn trip into town (Hauptbahnhof, Marienplatz) plus continued travel by any mode (U-Bahn, tram, or bus) to your final destination (e.g. hotel) as long as you are continual moving toward your desination in the MVV (no prolonged stops, no backtracking, no detours). For another €1,20 (€10,40) you can get a Single Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (entire network day ticket) which will give you unlimited on/off use of all of the conveyance of the MVV for the rest of the day (that is, to your hotel by any route, then back into town that night to see the sights, then back to your hotel). If there is more than one of you, a Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (valid for up to 5 people), for €18,80, will get all of you all over town, just like the Single Gesamtnetz Tageskarte.
lee is dead on. it could not be eaiser, and the people are very helpful. direct from the airport to the station at marienplatz. have fun, be safe.
Train it. The train station is just across the courtyard from the airport. Buy your ticket, go down the stairs to your train. To the main train station in Munich it's about 30-45 min.
We tried the automated ticket machines, but ended up going to the counter to an agent that spoke English to help us out --just too tired to try to figure it all out.
There’s no reason not to use rail into the city as it's quite easy, but I thought I would mention an alternative I used on my last visit. Lufthansa has a bus service that runs every 15-20 minutes from right outside the terminals directly to München Hauptbahnhof non-stop. I’m going from memory, but I believe the cost to be around €10 one-way…buy tickets from driver. Trip was around 40 minutes. BTW, you don’t have to fly with Lufthansa to use this shuttle.
Occasionally, people stay in Schwabing Nord. If you do, the bus goes there first on it's way to Munich Hbf. It's the fastest way to Schwabing Nord, although not as inexpensive as a single trip ticket with MVV. The bus takes you only to Schwabing Nord or the Hbf. Any other MVV transport from those two points would be extra. For two adults, Munich airport to the Hbf by the bus would be €21 (2 x 10.50). For €18,80 you could get a Partner Tageskarte, which would cover you not only directly to your hotel, but for the rest of the day as well.
John,
The information provided by Lee is spot-on (as usual)! The S-Bahn is the easiest option, and isn't affected by traffic issues.
I'm assuming you're staying in Munich for a few days? Which Hotel are you using?
Take the S-bahn. Did it with four sleepy kids. Easy.
