MUNICH TO VIENNA BY TRAIN

I will be flying from U.S. to Munich on 6 Oct, arriving AM 7 Oct, probably arriving between 7-8 AM. After doing a lot of research I will be using an Austrian Rail Pass once in Austria. My question involves getting from Munich into Austria. I want to depart Munich as soon as possible, so would I just get a ticket to the border, then use my railpass once in Austria? Can I activate an Austrian Rail Pass in Germany? I know there is a Bayern Ticket, but it's my understanding you can't use those until 9 AM. Any comments/suggestions?

Robert, in the same situation, I'd probably take the S-Bahn from the Airport to the Munich Hbf and then purchase a ticket from Munich to Austria. You can purchase this from the staffed ticket agents, but you may also be able to obtain tickets at the Euraide office in the station (English speaking staff and VERY helpful). You'll need to validate your Railpass in Munich if you're planning to use it for the Austrian portion of your trip. Note that you'll also need to purchase a reservation, IF this is compulsory on the train you'll be taking in Austria. Happy travels!

True, on workdays you cannot use the Bayern-Ticket until after 9 AM, but you can get on a train before 9. You just buy a full fare ticket to the first station you get to after 9. In this case, there is a connection leaving the MUC S-Bahn station on the S8 at 8:04 and connecting through the Ostbahnhof, 8:35-8:56. The train from Ostbahnhof gets to Garching, still within the MVV at 9:11. A Single MVV Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (entire system day ticket) for €10,40 will cover your travel from MUC to Garching at 9:11. From then on you can use the Bayern-Ticket.

You could also use a €19 Sparpreis Ticket (under 100 km) for the whole trip (S-Bahn and an express train, eg EC) but these are non-refundable, train specific, so if your flight arrived late, you might miss the train and lose the ticket.

There is a DB counter in the Munich Airport Center above the S-Bahn station. You should be able to validate your pass there. While you are there, you could buy a ticket from MUC via S-Bahn to the Hbf and from there to Salzburg on the RailJet (which continues on to Vienna). Then when the RailJet gets to Salzburg you could just stay on to Vienna using your Austrian Pass, which you validated at the airport.
