Munich to Stuttgart by train

I've been reading the questions and responses regarding train travel in Germany and when best to buy tickets, and noticed it was mentioned about a regional line and a high speed or express line. Which would the trip between Munich and stuttgart be considered? I too would like the discounted fare, but don't mind buying in Munich. My only concern would be that the fare would be at it's highest if purchased the day of the trip. Is there any particular ticket that would work best for me. Thanks to anyone who can reply.

Standard (full) fares are always the same. They don't go up on the day of the trip. Travel by express train would take about 2H15Min and cost €49-€54 per person, standard fare. If you were willing to commit to a specific train and purchase in advance, you could get a Sparpreis (Savings fare) ticket for as low as €19/p. Sparpreis tickets are limited in quantity and the prices are tiered. The price does go up as cheaper tickets sell out. Travel by regional train would take up to 4 hrs and cost €38,30/p, standard. There would be no advantage to using either a Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket on a work day for €42/p or a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket on a weekend day for €40. You can find schedules and prices on the German Rail (Bahn) website.

Thank you Lee. Your comments were in line with what I was thinking and learning as I do more reading. I will probably be able to commit to a specific train as my time is scheduled, but will keep an eye on fares.
