Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle in a day.

We are staying in Munich and wondered what was the best way to get to Neushwanstein Castle in a day? Is it by rail, bus, or tour? We are iffy about the tour as we may not want to do all that it entails and might want to get back to Munich sooner. If we take the train, can anyone provide specific information about where to start? Does the train take you right to the castle or do you take a bus from the train station in Fussen to the castle (or cab). What should I expect? Thanks!

Read my webpage, then PM me if you have any more questions. The train will take you from Munich Hbf to Fuessen Bahnhof. It's another 13 min by bus to the bus stop in Hohenschwangau, then 100 yds to the ticket kiosk. After you get your admission tickets, it's about a 30 min walk up a long hill to the castle. There are also pony carts you can hire.
