Munich to Naples

We are starting in Munich and making our way to Naples. Do you suggest car rental or train? We would like to do Austria, Venice and Tuscany area.

Denise,

I would definitely suggest train! To begin with, if you rent a Car in Germany and drop it in Italy, there will most likely be a steep "drop off fee". If you plan your rail trips carefully it will be much less stressful, much faster and no worries about International Driver's Permits, CDW, parking, vandalism, tolls, cost of fuel, traffic tickets, ZTL areas, etc.

Could you provide a bit of further information on which parts of Austria and Tuscany you'll be visiting? Also, how long is the trip and are you planning to fly open jaw?

Cheers!

Hi, Denise.

Ken is dead on. Drop off fees in Italy can be huge (we had some quoted at $900USD just for the drop off fee from Austria. yikes!). Driving in Italian cities is also.... frenetic.

Personally, I would think about renting a car for the Munich to Austria portion. There are lots of great little towns, villages and castles you can stop at, and driving around the area is just wonderful!

You could see about dropping it off somewhere along the border. Most of the trains to Italy route through Villach, just south of Salzburg.

How many people do you have traveling?

Last December my husband and I took the night train from Münich to Rome and it was fabulous. Comfortable and well worth the money.

A few days later we took a day trip to Naples it is only two hours. I definately recommend taking the trains.

Hi Denise--

We are flying from Munich to Naples on TUIFly for pretty cheap, then making our way north via train. You might want to check it out because you can get down to Naples in less than 3 hours and enjoy more time in Italy and less on the train, at least one way.

Enjoy!
