I'm trying to travel from Munich to Lucerne, Switzerland. I've looked in the timetable book and I see that there are trains to Lucerne connecting through Zurich. However, the timetable mentions that the trains to Zurich travel through Austria!!! Austria is not on one of our countries on our saver pass. Is it still possible to take this train or do I need to find another route to Lucerne (a long route requiring 3 train reservations was suggested through the raileurope reservation site)! Please Help!
If you use a pass to ride trains it must be valid in the countries you travel through. If the train goes through Austria, Austria needs to be on the pass. You can buy a ticket for the portion of the train journey within Austria. There is one exception to the above (at least one) which the Austrian train from Innsbruck to Salzburg which travels in a "corridor" through a small portion of Germany without stopping in Germany - that train is deemed to only travel in Austria and a German ticket is not required. Have you actually bought your pass? I don't know where else you are riding trains but it is likely that Point to Point tickets, especially purchased ahead and locking into specific trains, will be quite a lot cheaper.
I already have my pass and plan to use it for Belenux,Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The Timetable doesn't show any stops of the train except in Zurich, switzerland and then the final destination of Lucerne... yet it somehow travels through Austria. Is it possible to just pay extra to travel on that leg from munich to zurich since the train travels through Austria without stopping? The only other option is a 7hr, 3 train booking from munich to lucerne. Thanks!
The are other options. Use the Swiss rail site, rail.ch, or the German one, bahn.de to see all the choices. There are 5 hour 20 minute trips with a single change on the way to Zurich, in Stuttgart. Or you could take the boat across the Bodensee to Romanshorn.
Breanna, Don't rely on the printed timetable that came with your pass. You need to go to the DB website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en If you look at your route here you can "show details" then you can "show intermediate stops". The easiest thing for you to do most likely would be to pay cash for the Austria portion of the trip. You may be able to find a different route using the DB website though.
Thanks, i went to the DB Bahn website and found a train as Lola suggested that stops in Stuttgart, Germany and then Zurich... without crossing through Austria. Does anyone know how to make seat reservations on the DB website with a eurorail pass, since I didn't find this exact train on the Eurorail sight? I can make reservations on the eurorail website for all of the trains that require them, but I just couldn't figure this one out. THanks!
Stop using the RailEurope ("Eurorail") website for train options and schedules. RailEurope has incomplete information. Any train that goes from Lindau, Germany, to St. Margrethen, Switzerland, through Austria, stops in Bregenz. You can purchase a ticket from the Bahn in Munich that will cover your travel through Austria. I don't think it will be border to border, rather from Lindau to St. Margrethen. The ticket will cost €7,40/adult. A reservation on the EC from Munich is not required, and it is not possible to make a just a reservation (ie, without also buying a ticket) all the way to Zuerich online from the Bahn. However, you can make a reservation for the EC from Munich to Zuerich at the station in Munich for €4/seat (while you are purchasing the ticket for the Austrian segment). For the train from Zuerich to Luzern, there are no reservations possible. To make reservations online for the parts of your travel in Germany, query from Munich to the last station in Germany (Singen or Lindau). Check the box at the bottom of the page for "Seat only" (you might have to use "Change other data" to see it). Then pick the orange box for Reservation. When using the Bahn website, use the correct spelling for Zürich (with umlaut) or at least "Zuerich". That will get you Zürich HB. If you just use "Zurich", you won't get the Hbf, just the airport.
Great thanks! I'll just purchase the reservations at the station in Munich! Cheers!
