I am getting conflicting info. regarding a train trip from Munich to Florence. Google maps says its a 6hr car trip. Various postings say it is a 8-9 hr train trip. Is it a direct train or do we switch trains? And, while I'm at it, navigating the Eurail site is ridiculous. What kind of pass do I need to get from Germany to Italy? Thanks!!!!
The best train timetable site for all of Europe is www.bahn.de. You can also book a trip from Munich to Florence on this site. There is a direct train that leaves at 09:32 and arrives at 17:38. The regular fare is 99.90€. However if you book well in advance (up to 90 days allowed), you can get an Europa-Spezial Italien fare of 33€.
There is also a direct night train departing at 21:03 and arriving at 06:18. Booked well in advance, you can get SparNight (savings) fares. For comfort and security, book at least a bunk in a six-person couchette. Paying a little more for a bunk in a four-person couchette is well worth it.
When you do a timetable search at bahn.de, enter Muenchen and Firenze rather that Munich and Florence.
You do NOT want a railpass for this route. Big waste of money.
