What would be the best way to get from Munich to Berlin - with a stop or two between? I am confussed when it comes to choosing trains (ICE vs. DB?)
"I am confussed when it comes to choosing trains (ICE vs. DB?)" I'd say that you really are confused. DB is a railroad company (Deutsche Bahn = German Rail). ICE (Intercity Express) is a type (the fastest) of the trains DB runs. You don't choose between DB and ICE. DB also runs Intercity trains (IC), Eurocity trains (EC), and Regional Express trains (RE), any of which you could take, with or without changes, between Munich and Berlin. Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find schedules. After putting in your requirements (from Munich to Berlin, date and time), it will show you some connections. If you want slower connections, with more stops, check the box "All without ICE" or "only local connections". Click the red box with '>' to expand the connection and show all trains (if the connection is not direct). Then click "Show intermediate stops" to see where the train stops on the way. With a Standard Fare ticket, you can get off at any of those places, then get on another train going on the same route to continue. If you want to stop at a place not on that train's route, use the Stopover option to specify going through a different station.
Keri, "...the best way to get from Munich to Berlin...?" I would choose a departure time on the ICE that goes directly to Berlin. No need to change trains when you don't have to, unless for lunch in Frankfurt or Nürnberg. This is a route I take at least once on the last few trips. The CNL night train goes directly Munich to Berlin.
Thank you very much for all of the information. It has been extremely helpful!
