Munich, Salzburg, Venice, Prague

Hi, I will be traveling to all four this late spring on my honeymoon. We do not have a specific itinerary in mind or order in which we want to visit these cities, except we fly in and out of Munich. Any advice on the most efficient way to complete this? We will be gone for 8 days so we can spend about 2 days in each city, maybe only one in Salzburg. Should we take trains to and from each destination?

Those destinations are very spread out.

When you say 'gone for 8 days' -- does that count the day you fly in and the day you fly home?

If so, that will be 1 'tired day' plus another 1/2 day (at best), giving you only 6 1/2 days to work with.

Munich to Salzburg is convenient - about 2 hours by train.

Munich to Venice is a long way -- 8 1/2 hours.

Munich to Prague is also pretty far -- 5 1/2 hours.

If you try to see all of these it is likely you will end up spending upwards of 28 to 30 hours on the train or in train stations to try to make it happen.

You would be better served focusing in on a smaller piece of geography -- perhaps Munich-to-the-Rhine, or perhaps Munich-Salzburg-Fussen.

EDIT: Meant to give you this -- you can check rail times easiest on this website:

The 8 days do not include two travel days. I think we are set on these locations and we are prepared to spend some time on trains despite the downfalls. I believe we can get an overnight train from Venice to Prague so that may save us some time. Right now I am loosely plannig on Munich to Salzburg to Venice to Prague to Munich all on trains.

You will definitely want to use a night train to save some daylight. The challenge is that buying train tickets for trips that originate in Italy cannot be done using an American credit card on www.trenitalia.com -- leaving only the more expensive proposition of www.raileurope.com.

It looks like most night trains Venice-Prague depart Venice about 9pm, connect in Vienna 8am, arrive Prague 2pm.

You will want to book as early as possible. The German/Austrian leg should be eligible for booking 92 days prior to the travel date. Your Czech republic inclusive ticket won't be eligible for booking until 60 days before the travel date, I believe.

Find more info about when rail bookings open HERE (2/3 of way down page).

In general, Seat61.com is a great resource to plan rail travel.
