Munich-Rome night train--OK? better than Paris-Rome train?

I read all the Paris-Rome night train reviews. How about the Munich-Rome night train or the reverse? Is it better, more comfortable? Does A/C work (for July)? we have 6 persons, so we would either take all of the 6 person couchette or do 2 3 person sleepers. thanks, Elaine

Same question here but with 5 people, instead of 6. We're taking the night train from Florence to Munich/Salzburg. It looks like we can't buy tickets yet because Bahn.de shows that we have to be within 92 days of travel. If I'm reading things correctly (1 Economy sleep for 3, 1 economy sleeper for 2), the cabins with beds are running 435 Euros. Does this sound close to right?

I don't know about air conditioning, but that's a CityNightLine train, which is the top of the line night train. Travis: The price varies by the day because the lowest priced Europa-Spezial tickets might have already sold out, but for Thurs, 4/26, which is about as far out as you can purchase them, I see a fare of €237 for the triple and €198 for the double, so €435 is possible. The lowest priced tickets are sold out for Fri, Sat, and Sun, so the trip would cost more. UPDATE:Just found it on the CNL website. "All the compartments in the sleeping cars are air-conditioned."

I am also looking at purchasing Munich-Rome City Night Line reservations for a sleeper car for July. Also curious if people have gotten a good night's sleep on these trains and for general reviews. Also, what website offers the best prices for sleeper car reservations? Can I buy tickets from DB Bahn bahn.de from the US ahead of time (up to 92 days before). They offer a 140 euro sleeper car for 2 people but Rail Europe's website cost 3x as much for this reservation.

"Can I buy tickets from DB Bahn bahn.de from the US ahead of time" Yes, it's easy. I think you will find the best prices on either the German Rail (Bahn) website or the Italian Rail (Trenitalia) website, because the ends of the train are in those two countries. European rail companies usually don't sell online tickets for trains without one end in their countries. In my opinion, the German Rail website is easier to use, particularly when buying tickets online. The train is run by CityNightLine, but it's website is part of German Rail's. RailEurope is basically a travel agency that adds their own profit to the price of the ticket. Some people claim that they cannot sleep on trains, but I have never had a problem. I've spent 10 nights on trains, 9 when I was in college traveling cross country to school and once in Europe. I always had a private compartment; that helped a lot. I've never been able to sleep on planes, but that doesn't stop me from flying to Europe. On the other hand, high speed trains are so fast today that sometimes a night train, which goes slower, doesn't pay.

Hi! I'm gla this post was started. I too am planning to take a night train from Rome to Munich in July and wanted a sleeper cabin for 2. The rates on some of the websites are crazy! I thunk Germanys site bahn has the best prices and u can buy 92 days out. I will be getting office a cruise and exploring Rome and litle more before the train and was wondering how the locker are for checking baggage at the train station in rome? Thoughts?

Elaine, I'd say the Munich-Rome night train is a lot better than the Paris-Rome night train if you're in Munich and you want to go to Rome. If you wanted to take the Paris-Rome night train, you'd have to go from Munich to Paris first. :) Sorry! I just couldn't resist that! Actually, I did take the city night line from Munich to Paris some years back, but I splurged and booked a private compartment. I slept like a baby but I always do, on trains, so my experience probably isn't relevant. My family of four took a Vienna-Munich night train in a 6-person couchette, though, and it was tolerable. There was one young single gentleman with us, and we all got a decent night's sleep as I recall.

As far as I am aware, according to RS Italy, you can't buy tickets for Italy online as you need local creditcards. So go with DB. I read an issue with security on the night trains, can anyone shead light on this? I believe a couple was in a sleeper car and their stuff was stolen while they were sleeping. I presume DB is safer than Italian rail, but someone said that people have copies of the keys?
