Munich MVV 3 day zone 1 ticket

Hey all,

I was looking at the MVV website for Munich and i cant find any answer to this question.

Info. I will be there for 3 full days and was looking at the 3 day zone 1 ticket to use on my daily trips about.

Q. Is there a "supplement" i can purchase to go beyond zone 1 if i have this 3 day ticket?

many thanks and happy trails

I agree with Sam. Just buy point-point tickets for the travel you want outside of zone 1 - assuming it's only a few (one) time. The only thing I know of outside the inner zone that is commonly frequented by tourist is Dachau. Have you other places planned?

@ Sam,

thanks for the link to the isar card. I will review it and see how it works out.

The attractions discount dont mean much to me since i will be seeing more than what they offer.

@ Lee

Originally i wasnt going to Dachau, but i think i can squeeze it in or i will leave something else out to see it. i also want to see the Flugwerft Schleissheim (aviation museum) near Oberschleißheim (zone 6/7) too. Those 2 will be the only 2 things outside of the the zone 1/2.

thanks all and happy trails.

Munich MVV used to be divided into 16 concentric rings (I can no longer find a ring map on the site). Now they use 4 zones. Don't confuse rings and zones. I think it was roughly 4 rings per zone. They sold strip ticket in strips of 10; they still sell strip tickets at 12,50€ for 10. You used 1 strip per ring. You can still use rings and strip tickets, but the site doesn't do a good job of telling you how. I can't help because I have never used strips; I use Tageskarten.

Both Dachau and Oberschleißheim are in the second zone or the 6th ring. According to the MVV website, the fare from the Haubtbahnhof to either venue is 5,20/P one way for a 2 zone ticket or 6 stips at 1.25/strip. However, you can purchase a weekly IsarCard for rings 1-6 for 25,60€. I think that would be your easiest way.

The zones are set up so that there is a station on the border of the zones. The border station at the outside of the inner zone (1) is Karlsfeld on S2 to Dachau and Feldmonching on the S1 to Oberschleißheim. An inner zone Tageskarte (for example the 3 day inner zone one) would cover you to the border station. From there to Dachau or Oberschleißheim uses one strip. That would be the "supplement" you are talking about, but that would only take 4 strips for you stay, and I don't know how you purchase single strips. And I think the strips have to be cancelled at the station where you start using them, so that would mean getting off in Karlsfeld or Feldmonching to cancel the strip. That's why I said to get the weekly IsarKarte Ringe 1-6 .

The MVV S-/U-Bahn map of Munich, showing the zones is at www.mvv-muenchen.de/fileadmin/media/Dateien/plaene/pdf/Schnellbahnnetz2014DB_Englisch.pdf.

I found it, the ring/zone map of the MVV - www.mvv-muenchen.de/fileadmin/media/Dateien/3TicketsPreise/dokumente/TARIFPLAN2014Gesamtnetz.PDF. It's a little fuzzy.

@ Lee,

thanks for the link and info. im surprised that there are "rings" and "zones". if it was up to me, id dump the rings and keep the zones, but im sure someone had a reason for both.

at this time i think im going with the Isarcard. most likely the 2 ring since 90% of my travels will be there and try the various stripe ticket and single tickets. To me its a learning experience so i like to try various things.

happy trails.

A single trip within one zone cost 2,60€. A single trip within one ring costs 1.25€ (one strip @ 12.50 for 10 strips).

No, a trip (other than a Kurzstrecke or short trip) within a ring requires 2 strips (2,50€), as does any trip within the zone. A Kurzstrecke is 2 stops on the U-/S-bahn, 4 stops on the tram or bus. So, you could go from the Hauptbahnhof to Marienplatz on the S-Bahn for 1,25€ using strip tickets whereas it would take a one zone ticket for 2,60 using a zone ticket.

A Kurzstrecke is independent of zone borders. A Kurzstrecke would allow you to go from Allach, inside the inner zone, to Dachau, in the second zone, two stops away on the S2, for 1 strip, or 1.25€, vs 5,20€ using a 2 zone, single trip ticket. For someone living in Munich and having year pass for the inner zone, going to Dachau would require just 1 strip for Karlsfeld to Dachau.

In your case a three-day inner zone Tageskarte would cost 15€ and cover your travel in the inner zone. Four strip tickets would cost 1,25€ each and cover you from Karlsfeld to Dachau and back, and from Feldmoching to Oberschleißheim and back, but buying 10 strips to get 4 is not economical. You might be able to buy individual strips for 1,30€ each. Check at a ticket counter. If so, that way would cost 20,20€. Or, a weekly IsarCard for rings 1-6 costs 25,70€ and covers travel to Dachau and Oberscheisheim, but 2 XXL and 1 inner zone Tageskarten (since on the third day you won't go out of the inner zone) would only cost 22,20€.

The price page for MVV tickets is at www.mvv-muenchen.de/de/tickets-preise/preise/index.html#c9888 (in German). Innenraum is inner zone, 3 Tage is 3 days, München XXL is for the the two inner zones of Munich, for rings, Wochenkarte is the one week card.

@ lee,

thanks for the catch.

I wasnt thinking right about the rings/zones.

When it comes down to it, having spare/extra strip tickets isnt an issue since i plan on going back for Octoberfest. I didnt think of it this year and didnt make reservations soon enough so i will skip it this year and go for next or after that.

happy trails.
