Am planning an overnight train trip from Munich to Florence, round trip, weekday in September. There is a nonstop each way. Have a first class Eurailpass. Is it worth the extra fee to get a sleeing couchette or would I be just as comfortable in first class?
Do this test- have someone lightly jostle your bed every few seconds while you try to sleep at night. If you sleep fine, a couchette might be worth the extra money. If not, it probably won't much of difference if you're lying down or reclining.
I sleep well on Amtrak trains in the US, even in a reclining seat. However, I recommend that you at least spring for a bunk in a four-person couchette (more room for both people and luggage than in a six-person couchette). Couchette doors lock from the inside so your luggage will be more secure than sitting out in the open in a rack above a reclining seat. Popular night trains can sell out weeks in advance so I recommend that you buy your sleeping accommodation supplements now on the German Rail site. Enter your departure date and use Muenchen and Firenze as the spelling for your cities. Select the night train and click on "Check availability." Then click on "Book only extra charge." Select "Pass offer" and click on "Continue." Select the sleeping accommodation of your choice and proceed with booking. Do a separate booking for the return. Important note: Even if you stick with a reclining seat, you'll have to pay a supplement for it.
