Munich connection

is 45 min enough of a layover time on United coming from the US? We are looking at AF to Linate from CDG or Munich to Malpensa with only 45 min. connection which seems very short for having to go through security and such.

No. Well, yes in theory, if every star in the heavens align, you aren't delayed, are first off the plane, your gate is close to Passport Control, no other international flights have just landed ahead of you, and you don't have to change terminals or go to the bathroom. You would at the very least have to clear passport control and security. If you need to change terminals that will add another 10-20 min. They would likely be starting to board before you even reached the Immigration checkpoint.

If the entire travel is all on one ticket, and that's the connection they give you, go for it. I don't think you will make the connection in 45 minutes, but they are responsible for getting you to Malpensa.

You should arrive in Munich with United at T2, where you will have to go through Schengen immigration (passport control). That alone could take 45 minutes, but it never has taken me that long.

As far as I can tell, your Air France flight will leave from Terminal 1, which is pretty much the other side of the airport from T2. However, there is a regular shuttle bus between the terminals. Airport customer service has assured me that there is no security check entering T1 from the shuttle from T2, so that should help.

Of course, any change in Europe after a trans-Atlantic flight depends on how close to the scheduled arrival time you actually arrive. I've been an hour late arriving in Germany from the US three out of 11 times this century; I've also been early.

Another consideration is how early/late your scheduled arrival in Munich is. Assuming it is early in the day, there will be lots of flights to Milan still to come. That's one of the advantages of having your last connection being in Europe (another discussion).

CJean,
last time I flew out of MUC (2017), the United's gate was the last one on the south end of the main T2 terminal, and passport is in the middle. There is over ¼ mile between them. I don't know how the addition of the T2 Satellite terminal has changed things.

Lee, most of our Munich flights have been to or from Canada, and now can involve the satellite building, so an extra shuttle ride. Once, just once, I want a flight leaving from the closest gate to the checkin counter and arriving at the closest gate to passport control. A gal can dream...

Just so everyone knows, the "shuttles" she talks about are a pair of rail subways between the original T2 and it's satellite. There is one between the out-of-Schengen (airside) gates of H & L (Sat.), and one between the inside Schengen gates, G & K (Sat.), so if you are coming from outside Schengen and going to an outside Schengen country you don't have to go through immigration. And in neither case do you have to go through security when moving to and from the satellite terminal.

The "other" shuttles are buses between T1 and T2. T1 is where most (all) international flights (ie, out of Schengen), and Star Alliance flights arrive. T2 is mostly for intra-europe, not Star-Alliance, airlines. These buses are also segregated as to in-and-out of Schengen, and, as I have been assured by MUC customer service, there is no security when entering the other terminal.

If OP is coming into MUC on United he should be departing on a Star Alliance flight to Milan/MXP. That would be Air Dolomiti or possibly Lufthansa. AF should not be in the picture, unless OP is on two different bookings; in that case, no... Just no.

I suspect OP is alternately considering flying AF to Milan/LIN via CDG, but CDG connection times are another discussion.
