Multi-City Trips on Google Flights (be aware)

Google flights is handy but here's something I just discovered. Booking a multi-city trip (in this instance Pittsburgh to Rome; Pisa to London; London back home to Pgh) costs $1,000 more than booking Pgh to Rome and London to Pgh, then adding a separate booking for Pisa to London- on the same dates and flights as the original multi-city booking.

Good reminder to always check your flight options. I rarely book multicity flights that include that short intra-Europe flight since it is often more inexpensive to book separately. But sometimes there are reasons, so it makes sense to check things several ways.

I’m assuming the flight from Pisa to London will be mid-trip, to enable you to continue your remaining travel days in (or near) London, and that the final flight from London to PGH will be on a later date. If so, it doesn’t surprise me that you found such a vast price difference when you do a separate booking. We had a similar experience a few years ago while looking at flight options to and from CDG. The outlier was the flight from Bilbao to Paris mid-trip, which we booked as a stand alone one-way ticket. Totally different story if those last two flights are on the same day to get you home, in which case it needs to be on the same ticket (booking).

Lynne, yes, that's correct. Several days in my old stomping ground-- it would be very risky to do it same-day, as you point out.
