Most 'ideal' train stop to hop on to

In Innsbruck, which is the 'main' or 'ideal' train stop for me to board in order to travel to Oberammergau? I am looking for the one that is centrally located or the stop right before Innsbruck or right before Tyrol. Should I book the train online or could I purchase on the day of travel in case I am not definite on the time of travel I want to do?

There would be no price advantage to booking that train online, even if you could. Most train are regional trains (REX 5420, 5416, 5412, etc) to Munich. They leave every two hours.

Most trains to Oberammergau start at Innsbruck Hbf and stop at two other stations in Innsbruck (Westbahnhof and Hötting) coming out of town. Westbahnhof is the last station for trains going to the Tirol (St. Anton, Liechtenstein).

There are three possible routes, any of which could be the fastest to Oberammergau, depending on the bus schedules. Use the German Rail schedule query page to find the right one.

There is an all rail route which is always available. Stay on the train through Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Murnau. Change in Murnau to a train to Oberammergau. The complete fare for that route is €22,80.

Sometimes (check the schedule) you can save time and money by going from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and then taking RVO bus 9606 from in front of the GaP Bahnhof to Oberammergau (40 min). The train to GaP costs €14,40 pP. The bus won't be too much more.

Occasionally, you can take the train in Oberau (after GaP but before Murnau). From Oberau you can catch the bus (again, RVO 9606, 20 min) to Oberammergau. The rail part of this route costs €16,30.

These fares are what you would pay at a DB counter; prices at the Austrian ticket counter in Innsbruck might vary a little.
