HI We are interested in booking the Best of Southern Italy in 13 days this fall but cant seem to find a reasonable way to fly to Rome (probable 1-2 days ahead) and then back home from Naples (or stay another day and get back to Rome and fly out the next day). The one way flights are exorbitant.
Don't try to book one-way flights. Book instead as an "open jaw" or multi-city ticket. It should be much cheaper that way.
Also, it might wind up making more sense for you to go back to Rome at the end and fly out of there, especially if it turns out that is a direct flight to NYC if you can't get an affordable direct flight home from Naples.
just book it roundtrip NYC to Rome;
Naples is only 1 hour away from Rome on the train
there are no direct flights to the USA from Naples.
I agree, book your flights round trip to Rome. I took the high speed train from Naples to Rome, spent the last night in Rome and flew home the next day. Very easy and inexpensive.
Just book a multi city ticket (frequently called open jaw) into Rome and home from Naples. Probably cheaper in the long run. We almost never book RT tickets. Almost always find OJ cheaper and more convenient.
PS Just did a quick check of flights RT to Rome and OJ into Rome and home from Naples in mid-September.
The RT was in the range of $600 and the OJ trip was $640. When you factor the cost of getting back to Rome, etc., the $640 OJ is a no brainer. Book it now those are damn cheap prices. The cheapest I have seen in years. I was looking at Wed to Wed.
My husband and I took this same tour. We decided to fly into and out of Rome. It just happened to be the cheapest option. We took an Italo train from Naples. It was a fast connection, since it was a high speed train. Very nice car, nice comfy seats, and air-conditioned.
Most definitely, the one-way fares are exorbitant. It's not a bus ticket. :-)
Delta's main cabin roundtrip airfare between JFK and FCO (Rome) is $618.91 in October. The flight to FCO is on Alitalia (a code share). The return is on Delta; both flights are NONSTOP. Obviously I don't know when you're going so I picked October as there are 2 tours. That's a good airfare. It won't last long. Take the train from Naples to Rome.
Why take a train to Rome when for about an extra $22 (by your numbers) you can take a flight from Naples and avoided the higher expense and time lost by returning to Rome? The big advantage to open jaw tickets.
