Montreux-Gruyere train...don't need reserv even if GP train?

I want to take a day trip from Montreux to Gruyere/Broc. The SBB website shows trains hourly, but the two times I'm interested in are Golden Pass trains (8:45/9:45). Do I have to pay for a reservation or can I just hop on for the trip to Gruyeres? Will there actually be a separate train w/o the Golden Pass carriages? We are a group of 5.

Those specialty trains like the GP travel on the exact same tracks and routes as the normal trains. If there is an open seat on the GP and you have a valid pass or tickets then hop on and enjoy. But in all actuality it's just a train with a few more windows. So don't drastically alter your schedule just to get on a specialty train.

thx, I rode on the Golden Pass and Glacier Express last year, but had reservations for the routes. I just want to get from Montreux to Gruyeres this time don't need the special train...I figured we could just jump on with our Swiss Pass, but wanted to make sure (just hoping the 8:45 train isn't full in Montreux, but I can't imagine that it would be)...I remember seeing "reserved" signs above the seats last time in 1st class.

This stretch of the Golden Pass is more popular going towards Montreux. In the opposite direction you shouldn't need reservations, there should be plenty of empty seats available.
