Montreaux to Basel

My husband and I will be staying in Nyon, Switzerland with friends before we take a river cruise beginning at Basel. We want to take a scenic train, stay overnight somewhere in the Alps and then train on to Basel to embark. Even though I have traveled Europe quite a bit, I just wanted to hear back from others that might know a few secrets and offer their ideas.
We do like to travel first class if that matters and I want my tickets bought ahead of time. I'm a big planner:)

Here are two suggestions: 1- take a train to Zermatt. Sleep there. Next day, travel to Basel via Interlaken and Luzern (using the Gold Pass route). 2- take a train to some of the towns on the valleys out of Interlaken (Grindewald and Wegen are good options) using the first part of the Gold Line. Next day, travel to Basel (if you can arrive later in Basel, travel via Luzern).

I agree with Tim. That is a very scenic route and you could do your overnight in Gstaad.
