I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to do this. Does anyone have any experience with this trip? How do I find the local train schedule for Monterosso? I can only find the trenitalia site, and it doesn't want to give prices, and I can't find a list of trains out of Monterosso on it. I think it would be nice to go via Nice and then up to Avignon. Any help would be wonderful!
Try Monterosso to Ventimiglia, on the France Italy border. It show trains with nor without a change in Genoa. With no change, the ride is about 4 hours and costs 26 euronin second class. The ride to Nice adds a bit more than another hour, but Trenitalia won't show the price.
The Trenitalia site only shows fares for regionale trains up to seven days in advance. And it won't show you timetables for legs entirely within France. The best site for detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe is the German Rail site. It shows that you will have to make multiple connections to get from Monterosso to Avignon and you will have to go via Nice. Depending upon whether you take regionale trains or IC trains from Monterosso to Ventimiglia, the 2nd class fare will range from from €14.60 to €26.00. The standard 2nd class fare for Ventimiglia-Avignon TGV ranges from €51.20 to €61.30. Buy a ticket for the Ventimiglia-Nice leg in Italy. The fare on regional trains is €6.30. Book Nice-Avignon at www.tgv-europe.com up to three months in advance and you can get a Prem's fare as low as €24.00. Print your own ticket. To keep the site in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't offer discount fares, choose Great Britain as your country of residence.
