I would like to go to Monserrat but the guided tours are so expensive. It looks like you can go by train, about an hour away, and then what?
Not sure what your question is, but if it's just getting there, take the train to Montserrat Aeri and ride the cable car up. Or go one station further (Monistrol de Montserrat) and ride the funicular up. (I might have what's at each station backwards, but both have a way up.) The train leaves from Plaza de Espana (or everhow the Catalonians spell it). Read a little first and you won't need a guide. If you're having trouble finding information, use my spelling for Montserrat.
As Ed says, no need for a guide ... easy speezy. My wife and I took the train - bought the ticket just before we departed - last minute is probably easier during the week rather than on a weekend. We chose the cable car option to the top - seemed more interesting than the funicular - your choice. Beyond that, it's really a matter of personal preference. After the cable car, we chose to take the funicular to the very top (it was a beautiful day) and walk back down to the monestary - although it was a steep decline and longer than I expected, it was all good. We had lunch, walked around some more, took the cable car down, and returned by train to BCN with enough time to spare. PS, Rick's book was very helpful and allowed us to do all this on our own. PPS, we're in our 60's if it helps you feel better about the amount of physical effort required.
