minivan, people carrier, car, van - what's it in Scotland?

I know there is different terminology used to describe the above and my little grey cells are going in circles trying to sort it out.

Is a vehicle, USA 7 seater mini-van the same thing as a 7 seater people mover and is it defined as a car or a van? I guess I thought a 'van' in Scotland was always a commercial vehicle. So, is it the size or functional use of the vehicle that determines the classification for a 7 seater vehicle?

Please share your insight.

Thank you sooooooo much!

This does NOT answer your question but I'm having flashbacks to the van that 6 of us rented in Dublin to take to northern Ireland.... the floor became very slick in the rain. I think each of us wiped out at least once trying to get in or out. The terminology we settled on was "Mobile Skating Rink. Seats 6"

When looking on expedia and selecting '6 or more' passengers, 'van' is the term used for the choices that appear.

Oh my Doric8!🤣 It’s really not funny that you all fell but “Mobile Skating Rink. Seats 6” is priceless and I can't stop giggling over the possible skating moves.😂🤣 Thank you for sharing!

re: joe32F Thank you for the expedia reference! It never occurred to me to look there.

Yes in the UK a van defines a commercial vehicle. If you look for van hire here you will get commercial vehicles- not a large passenger vehicle.

Incidentally until this morning I thought MPV stood for “multi-person vehicle” but apparently it’s “multi-purpose vehicle.”

Thank you all for taking the time to reply! I think I was over thinking it. Van=commercial vehicle, otherwise it's a 'car', simple to remember.

I rented through Celtic Legend last year and even though the rental was with Arnold Clark I got a better price through them. I don’t know where you plan to drive, but I’d go with the smallest vehicle you can manage. Roads are narrow and parking spaces are small.
