We are currently planning a trip to Italy for August 2011 and a medeteranian cruise. Our plan is to fly into NAP from PHL to embark on the cruise. we then p Questions: 1. Do we need to claim our luggage to clear customs at either FRA or FCO upon arrival? 2. Would it be best to fly into FCO and take the Train to Naples?
3. Another alternative is a 5 hour connection in FCO. What is there to do for 5 hours inside FCO? Thanks
The above reference to Coming and Going is very dated and should be updated. General information is accurate BUT -- The taxi fare is a fixed 40E to city center. The Leonard Express ticket is now 14E and other quote prices are equally out of date. Terminal 3 has NOT been used for international travel for at least three, maybe four years. It is now Terminal 5 and accessed via bus on the other side of the airport. Edited - 12/1 - The above poster has changed the link so that it no longer links to the out of date About.com site which my posting refers to when making corrections.
I connected through FRA in 2002, domestic (Munich) to international (Denver), Concourse A to Concourse B. We barely made it in an hour. I was already familiar with the airport and had mapped out where we were going in advance, and we hustled. We spent minimal time at outgoing immigration. I would never recommend anyone to try to make a 45 minute connection, international, with incoming immigration, to domestic, in Frankfurt. And if you are changing Terminals, forget it.
Paul, A portion of your Thread is incomplete, so I'm not clear on all of your plans (the part after "we then p"). I have some comments based on your three questions. 1.) If you book a "code share" flight with FCO as the destination, you won't see your checked luggage until you arrive in Rome. If you book with separate airlines, you may have to retrieve and re-check your luggage (I'm not sure?). 2.) If you're boarding your cruise ship in Naples, I'd fly to Rome and take the train to Naples. The Leonardo Express runs directly to Roma Termini (about 30-minutes, frequent departures), and from there you can transfer to a EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita train (~1H:10M depending on which train you choose, €44 PP second class). 3.) I wouldn't want to spend 5-hours at FCO if I could avoid it! Regarding the connection time at FRA, I had to deal with a similar situation earlier this year. I was using a code share flight to FCO, with a connection at FRA. There was one hour between the arrival of one flight and the departure of the next. I asked both the Travel Agent (when I booked the ticket) and the Flight Attendant if that was going to work. I was assured that it was a "legal connection". The FA's reply was "this is Germany, you won't have any problems but don't stop for coffee on the way to your flight". That advice was spot on! I got through Passport control, a very efficient security screening and was at my next flight in about 15-minutes! In this particular case, I had chosen a seat in the front of the plane (the first economy section after "business class"), so was able to disembark very quickly on arrival at FRA. If I'd been seated at the back, the outcome may have been different. Happy travels!
Thanks all for your help. To answer Ken. here is the rest: We then plan to spend a few days in rome after we disembark from the ship in Naples. One option I saw was flight from PHL to NAP with a 1 hour connection in FCO on US air to from PHL to FCO then Alitalia (Air One) from FCO to NAP.
