Miles needed doubled!

I placed a trip on hold with X miles required. Got a confirmation email, indicating on hold and date of “expiration”. Two days later, I’m ready to finalize booking. Logged into my account and found that the required number of miles was now 2X, double the original amount and unacceptable to me! message indicated I must call the airline to complete the booking. I haven’t done so yet. I suspect they will say something like “sorry, it is 2X miles if you want it”.

I’ve put trips on hold before, booked many trips using award miles, never had a problem. Any advice before I call the airline?

Which airline? Policies change all the time and they're not required to honor previous policy.

American.

Must have been a glitch; just logged in again and trip with original number of miles is still available to remove from hold and book, which I have now done. Certainly gave me a good scare and I was not looking forward to a potentially unpleasant call to the airline!

I put flights on hold with American all the time. They have always been honored. You probably did hit a glitch.

But.....miles requirements have gone up. I looked at some trips in 2023 and mileage requirements have more than doubled in some cases.

Yep. I am trying to close my BA avois miles and I used up most of them just traveling to Europe which wasn't the case when I made reservations before Covid. Frequent flyer clubs used to be advantageous when not many people used them. Now since many people are in more than one club, airlines keep making it more difficult to use. I had to be flexible with my vacation as there were no reward flights for the days I wanted-and this was 7 months out.

Go anywhere,
I had trouble the AA site yesterday regarding award travel. I think they had a glitch and by waiting a few hours it sorted and I was able to book. Kind of scary and maddening as I had been biding my time for specific dates to open. AA does impose huge mileage requirements on some dates to some popular places. I have seen ranges from 60k to 300k miles on the same route.

So it seems I was not the only one impacted. This trip is not until early September; I was able to get business/first for the same number of points I used last year, and an acceptable itinerary too. Whew!

I have had the same flight be different ff on different days. When that happened I waited a couple of days and the lower value reappeared ( American )

And it's happening again. Got the first one booked for the initial number of miles required after waiting a day for it to correctly post.

I put another flight on hold and when I go back to complete the booking, double miles again! I've got a couple of days before the hold expires so hopefully this one will self-correct as well. I don't normally put award flights on hold but I had to cancel one and wait for the miles to be reinstated before I could re-book.
