Sorry for the urgency...I am currently in Lisbon flying to Milan tomorrow evening at 19:05 and I need to catch a train directly to Venice. By looking at the train timetable on trenitalia and it looks as if they don't have any trains that go that late. Am I mistaken? Factoring in the time it takes me to get from the airport to the train station I'm thinking I'll need something around 11:30. Is this even possible?
According to the Trenitalia site, there are still seats and/or sleeping accommodations available for these two routes:
ICN 785 leaving Milano Centrale at 23:00 and arriving at Bologna Centrale at 01:24. ICN 774 leaving Bologna Centrale at 03:18 and arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia at 05:30.
Regional train 10827 leaving Milano Centrale at 00:25 and arriving at Verona Porta Nuova at 02:32. EN 363 leaving Verona Porta Nuova at 04:40 and arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia at 06:38.
You won't have time to register and book on the Trenitalia site. (The process can take a couple of days.) You'll have to take your chances and buy your tickets when you get to Milan.
If you end up having to spend the night in Milan, the first direct train to Venice in the morning (IC 603 Foscari) leaves at 06:00 and arrives at 09:09.
Gwen, it doesn't look like it. The last train out of Milan for Venice leaves at 8:15pm. I had the same idea as Tim and I looked at routing you through Bologna. I saw the same thing Tim reported above. If that doesn't work for you, I would suggest looking for a place to stay near the Milan airport for the night and then taking the bus in from the airport in the morning. First train out in the morning is at 6:00am. If you have a booked hotel in Venice, you might want to take the Tim's suggestion and at least get there, check in and sleep through the morning.
