We are only going to be in Milan for the day then traveling to Lake Como. Is there a place to check our luggage at train station for the day?

There is indeed. It's on the lower level and a bit hard to find. You use the left door to drop it off, and the right door to pick it up. The line (if there is one) moves quickly. Look for the deposito bagagli sign.
