Travelling from Malapensa to Varenna in late May. The train (Malapensa/Milan/Varenna) is the practical means to get there. Probably a more dramatic way (but bit more involved) would be to take the train to Como and ferry from there to Varenna. Opinions on whether the ferry ride would be so pretty/fun/dramatic to be worth the extra effort? I've heard arriving by boat is a unique experience. Thoughts? Thanks
My experience is that the ferry ride is a means to get from location to location. When I used it this past October (and previously during the month of September years ago) nothing stood out as magical. Being onshore and visiting the towns was quite enjoyable! The lake is scenic. The train ride is quick but sterile. Operationally it was very efficient. If you’re tired from the flight add another dimension. You may find it relaxing to enjoy the ferry ride during your stay.
Since you are arriving at the Milan airport, my suggestion is to take the train to Varenna. Not sure that the ferry ride will be worth the extra hassle of making a train / ferry change in Como. If you are like most folks, you'll arrive somewhat jet lagged, and any enjoyment the ferry ride might offer will probably be dulled by your mental and physical condition. You can always take the ferry ride(s) from Varenna after you've recovered a bit.
Note that you do not need to travel all the way in to Milano to go to Varenna. The normal route is via Saronno and Monza. See www.trenord.it.
Just buy your ticket at the airport. Trains go every hour.
What time would you be arriving at MXP, and from where?
If coming in at 10AM from Paris after spending a week there is not the same thing as arriving from SFO at 5PM after 18hrs of travel.
