Milan Central Station Overnight

My friend and I are traveling from CT to Gimmelwald. The train we want to take from Vernazza arrives in Milan about 1 a.m. The next train leaves Milan about 7:30 a.m.

That leaves 6.5 hours in Milan Central Station. Is it safe for two women (mid-thirties) to spend the night there? I tried researching it online (and on RS) but there is a lack of recent info - the only comments I found are more than 2 years old. We are concerned with accessiblity (does it get locked up at night) and safety.

We did contemplate getting a room near by but the thought of having to find the room that late only to pay for about 5 hours of sleep before having to be back to the station isn't appealing. We'd rather just stay at the station if it's feasible.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Suggest you google "Milan, It, train station" and read the comments on www.virtualtourist.com. I've used the station, however, never at night, but I don't think I'd sleep there.

I slept in the Milan train station a dozen times -- when I was in my early 20's... I'm 6-foot, 230 pounds...

I really would not recommend spending the night in the train station for two women. If you were arriving earlier - maybe - as you would be ensured of getting a seat in the waiting room. By midnight the Milan station is pretty crowded with backpackers squating for a free place to spend a few hours before heading out.

I found the routing you are talking about, and it doesn't get you into Interlaken until 10:28am. Why not go the safe route, plan to arrive Interlaken just 4 hours later at 14:28 and take the routing that departs S. Margherita at 08:22am.

That will give you one last SAFE evening in Vernazza, and will only cost you 1 lunchtime in the Berner Oberland.

Thanks Jerry and Jim!

I actually did some more research after posting this topic. My friend and I have a new plan because safety is more important than saving money and I didn't like what I was reading.

We are going to leave Vernazza earlier in the evening, get into Milan about 10p, stay at the hostel next to the station, and then take the train first thing in the morning. We figure that's a good compromise. We only lose about 3 hours in CT, still get almost an extra 1/2 day in Gimmelwald, and have a safe place to sleep!
