We will be in Menaggio on Lake Como for 3 days in May. After that we want to get a rental car which we will return in Venice 6 days later. Are there any rental agents in Menaggio that have drop off in Venice, or is it easier (or cheaper?) to just book a major company from home and pick up the car in Como? If we pick up in Como is there a bus from Menaggio to Como or is it best to cross the lake and use the train from Vernazza and get a rental from Lecco? We'd like to pick up the car by noon. Any help would be appreciated!
There's the high speed hydrofoil from Bellagio (right across the lake) to Como if you can't get a rental in Menaggio.
I would check with AutoEurope, they are reliable and tied in with most of the majors. If AE does not have a connection in Managgio, then there isn't one there that you would want to use. If you have to take a boat to Belaggio or Como to get the car, so be it, it just adds to the experience. Don't forget, you need an IDP to drive in Italy.
Como has more options than Lecco, Milan even more. It depends on your itinerary.
I checked Autoeurope and there was nothing in Menaggio or Bellagio. So the boat to Como, maybe the faster hydrofoil, and a car from there sounds like the right way to go. From Como we have about a 3 hour drive to Levanto, so it should work out okay. (We could use the train to Levanto also, but we want the car to have more freedom to explore on the drive east to Venice.) Thank you all for taking the time to share your experience.
