Does anyone have any experience regarding public transportation options from central Florence to the American Cemetery for the Memorial Day ceremonies?
We took the bus, as described by Rick in his book, to get out to the cemetary. We told the bus driver that we wanted to get to the cemetary (in our mangled Italian, but he understood). When we reached the stop (about 30 minutes from the main bus station), he told us so that we could get out. That was the easy part! Our return wasn't quite as easy. It seems that the return route is in a different location. The cemetary supervisor was very helpful the day we were there with advice for helping us return to central Florence. My guess is there will be more people there when you visit if you go for the ceremony. Perhaps they might also help you. Just be flexible and enjoy the cemetary experience.
Thanks for your reply, Amy. Yes, I was thinking it would have to be the bus. It's good to know that you board the return bus in another location at the cemetery. Hopefully someone there could give directions to that location. Thanks for the tip.
This is a lovely cemetary although we weren't there on Memorial Day. We have attended the Mem Day ceremony at Margraten (Netherlands) and will be at Colleville sur Mer this year. It's an amazing experience to be an American at our very traditional ceremony in another country although each cemetary is considered US territory, and the supt. at each cemetary is an American. If you want more info, check the Am Battle Monuments Commission website.
