My friends are arriving Terminal 1 at Heathrow at 1215, 2 hours before my arrival at Terminal 3 at 1415. They want to wait for me before heading to our flat. Once they go thru customs, etc, will they be able to take that free train that connects the terminals to meet me in T3? Any suggestions on where they can wait for me?

T1 and T3 don't have a train connection, they both use the same Tube station. You walk between T1 and T3 to the other. They should be able to wait for you at your arrival area, just as if they were coming to the airport to pick you up.
