Maybe A Stupid Question But.........

I bought a round trip ticket from Munich to Nuremberg and back on the German Rail site. Got it in the mail with no problem. Do I have to validate this at the train station somehow or am I good to go and all I have to do is jump on the train? I have reserved seats know what platform it's leaving from etc.

My experience riding an I.C.E. train from Munich to Nürnberg was that I simply boarded the train in Munich. Soon after the train left the hauptbahnhof, a conductor walk into the car to check my ticket (a printout of a PDF file sent by e-mail). I also had to produce the same credit card which I used to purchase the ticket. As a side note, know in advance which car you will be riding, so you can board directly into that car.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I had the ticket itself mailed to me. My understanding is you only have to show a credit card if you printed the ticket online.

Russ, I think showing the credit card is to prevent you from printing two copies and giving the other one to someone else. Since they sent it to you, there's only one copy.

I guess the confusion is because, in Italy, you have to cancel tickets, but, in Germany, the conductor does that.

I don't know that there is any reason for you to cancel a ticket for a specific trip. If it specifies the date and time there is no way for anyone to reuse it.

Jeff, Italian tickets are only for travel between two points. They don't specify time, therefore, if you didn't cancel them, they could be used again.

Speaking of showing a credit card.... I recently booked a flight on Turkish Airlines from Izmir to Istanbul and TA states that I have to show the CC I used to pay for the tickets with, when checking in for the flight. NO credit card - NO fly! Normally I would not take that particular CC with me to Europe, but now, no choice. I did not have advance warning of that requirement when making the reservation, only after receiving a confirmation e-mail from the airlines.
