Al, sign up for the auto notice on a couple of the major trip services, and let them tell you when the cheapest fares are available. Sign up NOW with Orbitz, farecompare.com, etc.

I don't know where you are flying from in Florida, but looking on Orbitz I found that Lufthansa has just initiated some direct flights from Orlando to Frankfurt (9hrs) for as little as $800 in May/June. Frankfurt is a wonderful hub. If you book your own trip from Frankfurt to Rome on Luft there are $100 flights for the same time frame.

There are lots of low cost inter european airlines that may have better prices. (see whichbudget.com)
We flew on Air One from FRA to Rome last June.

So, I see R/T tickets curently available that would get you there and back for $900, including taxes. If you consentrate on finding a good flight and price "across the pond" to a major hub (FRA, Munich, London, etc.) you can always find cheap flights on the inter-european airlines to your final destination.

It really does pay to shop around.

One option might be to fly to say London Gatwick (if you can get a cheap flight).

Then take an Easyjet flight to Rome. I have just looked on your behalf for you and you can take a round trip for as little as $172 - but at the moment you can only book up until March 28th 2008.
