Make sure you take the right passport

I’m on a lot of social media travel sites just lurking and twice this past weekend I saw a report from two different people who got to Europe with expired passports.

You’re probably trying to figure out how this happens. It’s pretty easy.

One. If you were renew online, they no longer deface your old passport. You just get a new one so you have two passports, and neither one of them have holes punched in them or something that automatically will tell you this is not the current passport.

Two, if you check in on your airline online, you put in all the passport information you scan it, etc. and they see it and they know you’ve got a valid passport. They’re happy

Three yes at the gate, they generally check passports, but what they’re really looking at is that you have the passport and it’s signed they don’t check the expiration date. You’ve already submitted all that to the airline and they were happy and the agent’s system tells them that. They are trying to get you boarded on the plane in a hurry so you’ve got this old passport that expired a month ago that has no evidence of damage they won’t notice.

Unfortunately when you get there this shows up. One man was desperately trying to figure out what to do about his wife who was in a holding room at CDG. The other was allowed to enter as the passport expired in a few days but they took away the passport, gave them an official statement explaining why they didn’t have a passport and told them to go to the embassy the next day. This couple actually had a neighbor FedEx them the new passport

This is a very good reminder.

It seems like the thing to do would be to "self-deface" one's expired passport upon receipt of the new one. I will make sure to do that next time I renew.

Put the old passport in a "memories" file or store with your old tax returns.

Oof. I have all the passports in one drawer. I do have some old ones of my kids' so I do check I have mine when I pull mine out, but I wonder if in my haste to pack, etc., if I'm checking to make sure I have the most current of mine. I will now!

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but when I kept my old passport the passport guy punched a hole in it to indicate it was no longer valid and my Mom's had a top corner cut off. That's not done in the US?

Yes, if you renew in person or by mail, but.... as I indicated if you renew online there's no way for the passport office to deface your passport.

That's not done in the US?

The key here -

One. If you were renew online, they no longer deface your old passport.

from the US Department of State -

  1. I'm renewing my passport. Do I get the old one back? If you renew online, keep your most recent passport and do not send it to us.

You're not sending it back, so the USDoS is not defacing the old passport.

Good reminder! I’ve moved my expired passports to my bank’s safety deposit box because I do like to look at them occasionally. My photos on the passports would give me a quick indication that it’s not the new one. ; )

Oh no!! this is such worst case scenario! I actually like to keep both my passports in in my passport holder. One in the front pocket as its opened and one slide in the inside pocket right behind. In some countries they may ask to see a previous visa or entry stamp, so I prefer to always travel with both just in case. I agree though, my photo inside makes it quite clear which one is up-to-date. lol

I plan to bring along my expired passport for my future trips. If it's a "full validity" (10-year for adults) undamaged U.S. passport, even if expired, you can use it as a primary evidence of your U.S. citizenship when applying for an emergency passport abroad in the event if you were to lose your current passport. By bringing both new and old passport, it will also fundamentally address the 'concern' of bringing the wrong passport.

So do not 'deface' your expired passport; just put a sticker to clearly mark it as expired passport.

OK, it looks like the same situation now in Canada and we don't send in the old one. *In capital letters is a reminder that as soon as you apply, your current passport will be cancelled, so don't do it just before a trip. I guess that happens if I apply in person as well because they defaced mine as soon as I applied.
