Is there the equivalent of a hop-on hop-off boat on this canal? I would like to start at Bamberg, travel to Nuremberg where I would stop and do touristy things for a day or two. Then back on the next boat 'til I got to Regensburg and stay there for a day or two. And continue back on the boat 'til I reach Kelheim. I want to spend more time and in these cities than you can on a river cruise. Any ideas if this is possible?

Trains. German Rail (Bahn) website Actually, the train goes through Saal. There is a bus (15 min) from there to Kelheim Zentrum. The website for Regensburg mentions a one hour cruise on the Danube, but that wouldn't go far enough. If you just wanted to spend some time on the water, you could take the train from Bamberg to Regensurg (with a stop in Nürnberg) and take a short river cruise in Regensburg. When I was in Passau (2007), I took a picture of what looks like a day cruise ship (no staterooms) going down the Danube. I'm not saying that there isn't something Ho-Ho like the K-D boats on the Rhein (there should be) but I can't find them.
