I have a vest with magnetic closures on both outside pockets. The magnets are about 3/8" in diameter and about wafer thin. They are sewn in. The TSA site says "strong magnets" are prohibited for carry-ons. Will this be an issue for me? I know this vest is sold a lot for foreign travel so I am hopeful there won't be any problems.
Be sure your ATM, credit cards and room key cards don't get close to the magnets.
Thanks, I had thought about that, but then forgot. I cut them out. No use worrying about that.
I have a Scotvest jacket with lots of magnetic closures. I've traveled with it many times and the magnets have never been an issue with the TSA.
Mike, I just got a Scottvest hoodie. Are they a problem with CC's etc?
I theory you are supposed to keep the magnetic strips well away from magnets as it will be erased...Scotvest warns of this with little notes in all the pockets:) A few times that I have accidentally put cards near those enclosures and nothing bad happened. YMMV;)
These type of magnets certainly not qualify as "strong magnets". They could erase a credit card though, but not just by one touch. Probably you would have to swipe a credit card over the magnet several times to erase it.
A warning for women [INVALID] the magnetic closures in purses can demagnetize both tube travel cards and tickets and Paris metro tickets. I learned this the hard way (and stupidly forgot the lesson from one city to the other). In both cities the tube, rail and metro people were very nice to me about "remagnetizing" my travel card and tickets!
Having ATM and credit cards near magnets, even small ones, doesn't sound like a good idea, given what's at stake, if there's a reasonable alternative to having magnets.
