We will be in Madrid on layover returning from a trip to Italy from 2 pm until 10 am the next day. We are traveling with grandparents and children. Would anyone be able to recommend a convenient hotel with easy access to the airport and but also easy access to restaurants or sites so we can get a small taste of Madrid during our short stay.

The airport is a distance from the areas you would want to see...30 minute taxi ata minimum, more if there is traffic. Check in process, advised to be there 1 1/2 - 2 hours usually before your flight. That will limit your time to see the city I fear. Friends stayed at the Hilton, near the airport and gave it high remarks. You might be able to take a taxi into the city from there, but that would be late afternoon and you would have limited time. If you did this, get to the Puerta de Sol area, and walk toward Plaza Mayor and the Palace. Leisurely, interesting, and will give you a sample of the city. Lots of restaurants, etc. there.
