Madrid - Granada

What are the pro's and con's of taking train vs. flying (Ryanair?) from Madrid to Granada and back. Will spend a week in Madrid and want a 2 day stay in Granada in March. No fast train from what I can tell, but getting to and from airports generally a hassle. What are security hassles like in Europe these days?
Thanks.

One other consideration is that the airport in Grenada is significantly far away from the city, I think about 30 minutes or so drive. Al in all, I would do the train, plus nice scenery.

Our standard is -- If the train travel is more than six, maybe seven hours, then we will consider air. We were in that area earlier this year but took the train from Seville to Granada. I think it would be easier to take the train. Security issues at airport are about the same as in the US. However, with Ryanair watch for the extra fees, luggage restrictions, etc.

Thanks, that's helpful. Train is always more fun anyway.

According to the timetables at www.bahn.de, there are two direct ATR (Alteria) trains/day that make the trip in 4hr36min. Go the site and click on the flag drop-down menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Madrid-Puerta de Atocha to Granada, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points (if any).

Another option: My wife convinced me to take the bus to Granada from Madrid and it was wonderful. With a twenty five minute break half way, it took five hours or less, was inexpensive, comfortable (watched Poseidon Adventure for the movie)and some splendid scenery. We love trains but found in Spain and Portugal that buses were an excellent option, sometimes quicker and drop you off in easy locations for getting to your lodging.

Another option is taking the AVE train to Malaga (10-12 trains per day, 2.5 to 3 hours) and a bus from Malaga to Granada (hourly service, two hours). While slightly longer than the direct train, it gives you more schedule options.
